Organic Hair Removal – Sugaring!

Organic Hair Removal

I recently learned about an organic hair removal product… it’s called “sugaring.” It’s similar to waxing, but uses organic ingredients and is done the opposite way…

Huh? You say? You use the sugaring paste at room temperature, so there is no risk of burning, and you apply it against the direction of hair growth. Then you remove it in the SAME direction as hair growth and it’s no where near as painful as waxing!! I’ll admit that it does sting a little, but I don’t have to brace myself for the removal like I do with waxing.

Here is a video tutorial from the woman whose sugaring I purchased. After I got over her beautiful calves (I have no calves so often have calf-jealousy. One of my highschool teachers used to say I had chicken legs. Inappropriate for a teacher to say? YES! True? YES 🙁 ) I saw how easy it looked, and the idea of using an organic product really appealed to me.

I purchased a trial size of the organic sugaring paste from JB Organic Hair Removal on Etsy. It arrived in the mail last night, and I was super excited to try it out.

Organic Hair Removal

j was also very curious about the whole thing. She has seen me shave on occasion, but usually isn’t in the bathroom when I shower so I think it was the first time she thought about hair being on my legs…

I tested it first, doing the “fingerprint” test to see if it was the right temperature. You’re supposed to press your finger into the paste and if it leaves a fingerprint it is the right temperature (usually room temperature). The instructions say if it is sticky and doesn’t leave a fingerprint to put it in the fridge for 10 minutes and try again. Fortunately for me, it passed the fingerprint test, so I used the small baggie of baking powder provided with the trial size to put on my legs. This keeps the paste from sticking to your skin. I only planned to do the sugaring on one leg, so I took the applicator (also included with the trial size and scooped a marble sized amount for starters. I kneaded the ball a few times, then started applying it like the video above shows. It was easier than I expected, and while it did sting a bit, it was no big deal at all. It was actually kind of addictive… once I started, I wanted to keep going. That small ball easily removed the hair from one of my legs from the knee down. I didn’t have time to do more, but you can bet I’ll be doing the rest of my legs tonight!! There are a couple of places where I need to re-apply the paste. With it being my first time, and my leg hairs are very blonde, I missed a few.

Jennifer from JB Organic Hair Removal mentioned in the above video that her hair has become finer after sugaring for several months, so I’m hoping the same will be true for me. Who wouldn’t love to have fewer leg hairs to remove?! She will be posting more videos on organic hair removal soon, I’m anxiously awaiting the armpit one… (Did I really say I am anxious to watch someone remove their armpit hair?!)

JB Organic Hair Removal has a facebook page as well, on which she will be posting her new videos. I’d encourage you to check it out!

Disclosure Notice: I paid for the trial size myself, but did let Jennifer know I would be making this post. I hope she sees some increased traffic for her great product!

What you need to know about Etsy store policies

What to put in Etsy shop policies

I have created an Etsy store, which right now has only a handful of items as I learn the ropes. Since I (like everyone else) have a pretty busy lifestyle, I decided to take my time with my Etsy store to learn what needs to be done. I also need some time to create the items I will be selling, and that takes time as well.

For today’s post, I will be focusing on Etsy seller policies. I did a few google searches and found some great resources and links:

After wading through all of these, I created a Word document so I can be sure to have all grammar and spelling issues resolved BEFORE I post them. (Not that I ever have any…) I looked at some other shops that a) sell similar items to mine and b) I just generally like to see what kind of policies they included. That in addition to the links above, helped me to reach the following as my policies.

What to include in Etsy Shop Policies

***************************************

Payment is expected within 3 days. Ready to ship items will be sent after payment has cleared. Custom items will be STARTED once payment has cleared.

♦READY TO SHIP ITEMS♦

Ready to ship items (indicated with “RTS” in the title and description) will be shipped within 2 business days of your order.

♦CUSTOM ORDERS♦

Please see item description for estimated shipping time on custom orders. Most custom orders will be shipped within 1 week of purchase unless otherwise specified.

♦DOMESTIC SHIPMENTS♦

I ship via USPS First Class, with tracking information. Shipment arrival time is usually 2 – 6 business days depending on destination.

I try to keep my shipping fees updated, but there are times when my estimates are lower than actual cost, especially with changes to shipping costs by USPS and so many zones/countries costing different amounts. When this happens, if actual shipping costs will be more than $5 than what was quoted, I will send a convo so you can determine if you still want the item and are willing to pay the additional amount beyond the $5. Any additional shipping costs less than $5 will be absorbed by me.

♦DOMESTIC SHIPPING UPGRADE♦

I ship via USPS Priority Mail. Shipment arrival time is 1 – 3 business days (not guaranteed according to USPS website), based on the delivery location.

If you would like to overnight a package, convo me and I will send you a quote.

♦INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENTS♦

I try to keep my shipping fees updated, but there are times when my estimates are lower than actual cost, especially with changes to shipping costs by USPS and so many zones/countries costing different amounts. When this happens, if actual shipping costs will be more than $5 than what was quoted, I will send a convo so you can determine if you still want the item and are willing to pay the additional amount beyond the $5. Any additional shipping costs less than $5 will be absorbed by me.

Estimated arrival time for international orders can be anywhere from 7 business days to 6 weeks depending on destination and customs delays.

Any customs fees, taxes, tariffs, duties, etc. that may be incurred at the time of delivery are at the discretion of your country’s tax and import regulations. All such fees are the buyer’s responsibility. For any additional information, please refer to your local customs agency.

Should there be a delay on orders because of transit times or customs clearances, please let me know immediately and I will try to help out however I can. Please note that an order is categorized as “missing” only when it fails to arrive after 40 days. I want your shopping experience to be a fantastic one, so please don’t hesitate to contact me.

♦INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING UPGRADE♦

I ship via USPS Priority Mail International. Shipment arrival time is between 6 – 10 business days depending on destination and customs delays.

If you would like to purchase insurance for an international destination, please let me know before you check out so I can send a revised invoice with this amount included. I do recommend insurance on all packages.

♦COMBINED SHIPPING♦

Additional policies and FAQ

The Consumer Product Safety Commission) uses a Choke Test Cylinder to determine whether a toy contains small parts that may be a choking hazard. The cylinder is 1.25 inches at its widest part. All items sold by TinkerTailorMommy are larger than 1.25 inches, however CPSC does say if a piece could come off and fit in the test cylinder it can be considered a hazard. TTM’s personalized story stones may have magnets glued to the back that can pose a choking hazard. TTM’s plushies may have small rice bags inside them to keep them weighted and upright. While the rice bags are securely sewn inside the plushie, should the plushie break, the rice bag can come out and pose a choking risk. Normal use should not dislodge the magnets or the rice bags.

Your satisfaction is very important to me. Before providing a negative rating, please contact me and we can work together to find a reasonable solution.

Thank you for stopping by and reading the “small print!” I hope it will be worth your while

***************************************

These are super long and I do wonder if anyone will actually read them. BUT it does try to cover all eventualities… It’s probably overkill though… Of course, since I’m a newbie, I can’t speak to the effectiveness of these policies yet… But I promise to update this post once I have had some time and experience with them. If you would like to copy any of them, feel free!

Advent Calendar Behavior Reward System

warm fuzzies pom pom reward system

My daughter is 5 years old right now. We had been having some issues with her behavior and started falling back on punishment, taking things away, timeout, etc. It didn’t seem to be working and she was getting more and more flagrant in her misbehavior. I happen to have a WONDERFUL hair stylist and one day we were talking about challenges with raising children, and she mentioned the reward system she uses with her daughter. We had been using a reward system for j, but the rewards weren’t really working out for us.

I wish I could find the original blog post that inspired me for the original reward system, but alas I can’t. Please know I’m not claiming to be the creator of this one. The blogger is a teacher, I believe, and gives out “warm fuzzies” as rewards. The fuzzies are really just those craft pom poms you can buy at craft stores. (The link above is from an online craft site. I’ve never purchased from there, but liked the picture, so if you click on it you will see that online store’s page.) I liked the blogger’s explanation of the “warm fuzzies” because it makes you feel warm and fuzzy when you do nice things for each other, or if you are a good listener. I’ve seen reward systems with marbles and other things, but I didn’t want that choke (or fall) hazard if they got loose…

We decided together, j and I, how many fuzzies she needs to earn before she received her reward. Initially we agreed on 14 fuzzies. She would earn the reward after maybe 4 – 5 days or so, but this seemed to be too long. So this time around we decided on 10 fuzzies as the reward level. She gets fuzzies when she listens the first time I ask her, when she makes her bed, gets dressed, cleans her room, etc. without me asking. She also earns them when she is helpful and respectful to J and me as her parents, b, her brother, and others who we see her in contact with.

I will talk about what we use as rewards in a moment, but first I want to say how well this seems to be working for us. She consistently looks for ways to earn fuzzies, and her attitude took a complete 180. We aren’t always consistent with the fuzzies. They are kept on top of the fridge, so I have to be the one who gets them down to give her a fuzzy. I’m thinking of making a change to the system but will post about that later… The nice thing is that we can restart at any time!

Now to the reward…

frozen advent calendar reward system

j loves to watch toy reviews on Youtube. There are a few in particular that she really likes, and for a while she watched reviews of advent calendars. I had the brilliant idea of using an advent calendar as part of her reward system. She can open a new door on the advent calendar each time she reaches her set number of fuzzies. This way she gets small rewards periodically, and gets SO excited about what is behind the next door she will be opening. She seriously studies the box, and plans ahead for each item she will get.

First we started with a Frozen advent calendar, that provided little cosmetics behind each door. The picture above will link you to the ebay seller from whom I purchased the calendar. Advent calendars with actual toys instead of pictures or candy can be a bit pricey, but this one lasted us more than 2 months, so spread out like that I didn’t think it was that bad. Of course, you can do all kinds of other things as rewards. We originally tried things like picking dinner, going to a movie, etc. but that didn’t work as well for us as this does.

Polly Pocket Advent Calendar Reward System

We are on to our second advent calendar, this time it’s a Polly Pocket one, and j loves getting new clothing items for her. I’m pretty pleased with how well this has turned out for us! I hope it works to inspire you to try a reward system for your little ones too!

My new obsession…

As you may know, my wonderful grandmother passed away in August. She was an avid bird watcher and bird lover. I used to bring her birds I found who had been hurt somehow, and she would find a way to nurse them back to life. She was amazing in so many ways, and this was just another one.

I have found that since her passing, I can’t get enough of bird designs. Bird prints on fabric, bird prints on paper, stuffed birds, you name it. I found inspiration in a fabric a few days ago, and thought I could make a little birdie out of felt. So here he is…

Jem birdie on Etsy

I have made a few others, but this is the only one that I made and took a nice picture of. My Mom wanted one, and these were the colors she chose. (Her favorite color is green.)

I am thinking about making some and adding them to my Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/TinkerTailorMommy. The problem is that I have no idea how much to charge for it. It takes me more than 2 hours to hand sew the entire little guy… I guess I need to do some research! I’m also thinking about creating a tutorial and maybe selling it on Etsy as a download… The problem is, what if people then only download the file and don’t buy my little birdies? Oh well… I guess I have some decisions to make, huh?!
